Programming the HomeLink garage door opener
The 911 comes with a HomeLink® garage door opener. I was really
excited about this feature because it's particularly awkward to have to carry around an opener when you drive a convertible.
I had very little success at actually programming the buttons to work with my Overhead Door Legacy rolling code garage door
opener. One door resisted programming completely, the other door worked after four or five tries but I was never able to
determine what I might have done differently when programming that door.
I followed the instructions in my Owner's Manual to the letter. No joy.
I Googled for solutions but came up empty. I found hundreds of frustrated HomeLink® owners who were having the same problem, but no good solutions. I read dozens of pages of forum postings on the subject.
Hopefully you've arrived at this page before suffering through all that because I'm pleased to say I found the solution.
I'll bet you're using one of those little "slim" remotes to program the HomeLink®. Stop. Go grab the big clunky opener that was the original remote. The little remotes are strong enough to open your garage door, but they're not strong enough to program the HomeLink® with the correct frequency. If you're using a big and clunky remote, make sure it's got a fresh battery inside it. You want that thing to be strong and loud.
It's really that simple.
If you're attempting to program the HomeLink® with the slim remote it will appear as if it is working. The car will lie and tell you that it learned the proper frequency (by flashing the lights three times or flashing the little LED indicator). Don't believe it. Use the big remote with a fresh battery.
I spent hours trying to program the HomeLink over several days with no luck at all. As soon as I switched to using the big, clunky remote I was done in about 2 minutes. No fuss.
If the big clunky one doesn't get it done I'll bet you just need a fresh battery.
